Remember that all good bariatric weight loss programs will involve consulting a doctor or specialist, some light to moderate exercise, and simple, maintainable changes to your diet.

Obesity and Weight Loss

  • Take a fresh approach to eating. Fresh foods are instantly better for you than processed foods. Take a look at the list of ingredients when you buy something. How many of the ingredients do you recognise? Fresh foods are high in fiber and low in fat, which is the perfect weight loss combination!
  • Fresh foods taste best! Fresh foods have more intense flavours. Try and buy food that is in season so it hasn’t been refrigerated for 6 months, which kills off many of the nutrients and destroys the taste of fresh food. Among the best foods for weight loss are potatoes, oranges, apples, grapes and pears. Remember that the longer fresh food fills you up, the less likely you are to binge and ruin your diet.
  • Eat solo. If the rest of your family isn’t dieting, eating around them can be a real challenge. to your willpower. Consider eating your meal away from the others to avoid temptation to ‘help clear up the plates’! You’ll feel more satisfied with what’s on your plates and avoid the temptation for seconds. Missing family meals can take a little bit to get used to, but the weight loss will help you spend quality time with your family in other ways.
  • Eat less, more often! Resisting in-between-meal snacking can be hard. This is one of the most important challenges to your bariatric weight loss. If you’re having difficulty resisting, consider saving part of each meal for snacking on later. That way you won’t increase your overall portion size, but you’ll be able to satiate those snack urges! Failing to address this problem and giving into snack urges will undermine all your other good work and hard effort.
  • Keep a food diary. Buy a small notebook and tuck it into your pocket or handbag. Immediately during or after meals and snacks, write down what you’ve eaten along with the food’s calorie and fat content. If you have a smartphone like an iPhone or an Android, consider using a free note-taking application like Evernote to track your intake. You will also be easily able to find a calorie counter to give you the information you need.
  • Explore other countries through your food! You don’t need t fly overseas to enjoy the deliciousness of foreign cuisine. Many other cultures have food habits that make ours look shameful in comparison. Not only that, but other countries’ food can easily be prepared and enjoyed at home with access to a decent supermarket and a few Internet recipes! Make sure to try out recipes you find in some ethnic cookbooks. In particular, we suggest wrapping your palate around Kimchi, fermented Korean vegetables that are a fantastic aid t othe digestion and betabolism, French ratatouille, Thai ginger dishes, and Japanese sashimi and ‘yaki’ (‘grilled’) food.
